George Ridpath of Berwickshire: your most illustrious of ancestors

Hello all. I have some information that might be interesting to those of you who utilize this site and, I hope, some of you may have some very important information for me as well.

At present I am working on my PhD in Cambridge. My topic is the analysis of the political works of George Ridpath, the famous Scottish patriot and political author. George Ridpath was the son of one George Readpath, or Readparth, and the grandson of another relatively important Scottish figure, Thomas Ridpath of Fulfordlees. My information suggests that George Ridpath was born in or around 1665 somewhere in Berwickshire, and lived his early life in 'Cockburnspeth', while other sources have referred to the town of Coldbrandspath.

Henry Redpath

Hi,
I live in South Australia and am trying to find information on my gg-grandfather Henry Redpath. We don't have a lot of information, but know that he was born in 1846 in Scotland and immigrated to Australia between 1866 - 1872. We don't know what ship he travelled on, or if he was a convict, assisted or paying passenger. It was rumoured that he was travelling with his brother(name unknown).
He eventually settled in South Australia as a farmer and married Elizabeth Elliot of Watervale in 1873.
He was buried in September 1887 at Blyth Plains(Kybunga) South Australia.
His father's name was Samual Redpath (mother's name unknown).

Doris and Gerald

I am Doris and Gerald Girdner's granddaughter. My grandfather pasted away just before their 52 Wedding celebration and Thanksgiving. My grandmother is taking it the best she can. I just needed needed to let any one who loved or knew them, know that they had a wonderful life together and that though we all miss him very much, I know that he is in Heaven smiling down on all those who loved him. I also wanted to say that he had a wonderful life with my grandmother and that my grandmother though see may be down at times, is the bravest person in the world. She is strong and has faith that God will see her through. I don't know if I could be as she is but I aspire to be. Many prayers, love and support go out to any of those who share in our lost. May God be with you and God bless.

Nancy Redpath

I have been researching the family of Isham Spence of Virginia. His wife has been shown variously as Nancy Redpath, Nancy Redman, and Nancy Minter. I would like some discussion on this matter. I have come to the conclusion that Isham Spence's wife was NOT a Redpath, but Nancy Minter Riddle. I don't know where to put this query.
Where's Ed?

Just a note on our family website to let everyone know what's happening with Ed Ridpath, your webmaster and occasional genealogist.

I've recently decided to run for political office. It will use up all my spare time (and then some!). Since many of you have contributed and enjoy using the website, I will leave the site up and running. My response to requests will be greatly reduced, so please be patient and understanding.

My campaign website is now online: www.EdRidpath.com

Thanks and wish me luck!

Ed Ridpath

3. Scottish and Indian Ancestry - Submitted by Bill Andrews

I just recently became interested in my wife's genealogy. Her mother was a Redpath who was born and reared in McAlester, Oklahoma, USA.. My mother-in-law's grandfather, John George Redpath, emigrated in 1867 from the northern portion of Northumberland, England, into Pomeroy, Ohio, and eventually into OK while the area was still the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory - several years before Oklahoma became a state. He and his wife, Margaret Potts, whom he married in Ohio, had ten children to reach adulthood. Their second son, William Redpath, married Sula Gleason, who was part Choctaw Indian on her mother's side. The marriage took place in Mushulatubbe District, Choctaw Nation, I.T.

2. Redpath Village - submitted by Robert Redpath

I note in the last News letter reference to the hamlet of Redpath, near Earlston. I have one or two (not great) photographs which I attach. You may include them in the next edition or forward them to whoever you wish. There is only one street, a cul-de-sac, with a turning circle at the end. Next to the village hall, which is pictured.

The reference to Melrose Abbey - Dryburgh Abbey is closer to Redpath and I imagine there would have been a closer tie or influence. Not sure though, not something I have looked into. Earlston is indeed the closest town to Redpath - I was married there. I am from Yetholm myself (right on the Scotland/England border) although I live and work in Edinburgh now. If any Redpath is ever in Edinburgh for research purposes or a holiday I would be glad to meet them for a drink and a "blether"

1. Web Work! Big changes on the Redpath Ridpath Reidpath Website

This issue is a little late, but this time I have a very good excuse: a total reconstruction of the family website. Gone are the old static pages, we now have a content management system (CMS). I also decided to ditch my old internet service provider (ISP) and that transition to a new host for the site was not smooth at all. Both these major projects have been completed, and while I'm sure we still have some bugs to work out, the new site is open for business!

The new CMS has many new features, some are fully operational and others require a bit of work before we get them 100%. Here are some of the things you can do:
